Day 2: Sightseeing in Marrakech!

Have a morning at leisure and linger on a wonderful breakfast and then but we hope you’ll be ready to go to tackle your jam-packed day of sightseeing in Marrakech! In the morning, you’ll see the Koutoubia Mosque (the iconic sight of Marrakech), the Bahia Palace (a stunning example of traditional Moroccan architecture), and the Saadian tombs.

Afterward, you will head to the medina for lunch at Terrasse Des Epices (included), followed by afternoon visits of the medina and the souks. During this guided tour, you will visit the medina and the souks of Marrakech, including the Jewish quarter Morocco’s rich history includes a long period of Arab and Jewish communities accepting their differences and living and working together to bring success to their respective businesses. The Mellah in Marrakech refers to the area where the Jewish community resided. At its peak in the 1500s, the Mellah in Marrakech included bakers, jewelers, tailors, sugar traders, artisans, craftsmen, outdoor markets, fountains and synagogues. While the Jewish population of Marrakech has substantially decreased, you can still see the shop fronts and a few synagogues as you walk around this part of town.

As you walk through the medina, you will also see madrasas or religious schools, and delve into the myriad pathways of the Souk. The term Souk refers to the markets, and the markets of Marrakech are located in a serpentine set of alleyways with twists and turns that can confuse even frequent travelers to the city! Our expert guide can give you an overview of how the souk is laid out and where the different sections are located, each focused on a different set of goods (Clothes, spices, lamps, shoes, traditional crafts, etc).

Have the rest of the evening at leisure!

Day 3: Hot air Balloon ride & Agafay Desert experience!

There is the option to begin this day extra early, as to do a sunrise hot air balloon ride. You'll wake up before sunrise, drive outside of Marrakech (45 min) and then board a hot air balloon. The flight will take you above the small Berber villages, palm oases, and cityscapes of the region around Marrakech. You'll soar across a candy-hued sky with the Atlas Mountains in the background and gain a unique 360-degree vantage point on Morocco. Once you land, you’ll enjoy a reception under a traditional tent for a typical Berber breakfast prepared by the women of the Douar (Village). It's a morning you won't soon forget!

Whether or not you choose to take a hot air balloon ride, you'll have a morning at leisure to either rest or explore the city on your own.

After lunch and once the sun starts to set, you will head directly to the Agafay Desert, which is a rocky terrain 45 minutes from Marrakech. You will drive from Marrakech to Agafay in the late afternoon, hop on a camel for a 30-45 min camel ride, and segway into a tented dinner overlooking the desert. To be clear, there is no sand in the Agafay desert so you don't get the flowing dunes of the Sahara, but it's the next best thing that's feasible without unduly long travel.

You will have free time to stargaze and drive back to Marrakech to spend the night at your hotel.

Day 4: The Magic of Marrakech

After you start your day with breakfast, you will head to the stunning Majorelle Gardens. Global fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent made his second home in Marrakech for many decades, and his vision drove every detail behind the lush Gardens, accompanied by a small but must-see Berber Museum!

After your visit to the Majorelle Gardens, you can head next door to the Yves Saint- Laurent Museum, which honors the fashion icon’s love of Marrakech and builds upon the collections housed at the Majorelle Gardens. The building itself is a work of art and houses a permanent collection of some of YSL’s best-known designs along with rotating installations dedicated to themes about which he cared. You’ll take in the beauty of the gardens and museums before enjoying your lunch (not included).

Optional Extra (Moroccan Tagine cooking class): You will head to La Maison Arabe to enjoy an immersive and fun cooking experience!! Accompanied by a local “dada”, or expert cook, you will dig into all of the key components of a Moroccan meal, starting with how to prepare the famous Moroccan mint tea. Next, you’ll sample some tasty local bread and here all about how we cook traditional Moroccan bread. From there, the hands-on portion of the course begins as you will prepare two different staples of Moroccan starters, a tomato and cucumber salad and a second salad using eggplant (please note: the exact salads may change depending on the day’s ingredients).

After that, you’ll finally learn to prepare your main course, the famous Moroccan Tagine of chicken with preserved lemons. While your tagine is cooking over the fire, you’ll also prepare Moroccan cookies with almond paste. The class ends with a dinner where you eat your very own masterpiece!

You’ll then enjoy your evening at leisure.

Day 5: Into the Atlas Mountains

After breakfast, hop in the car and say goodbye to Marrakech. Today, you’ll drive into the High Atlas Mountains for around 1.5 hours and check-in at your hotel.

Upon your arrival, and after lunch (not included) you’ll have the rest of the afternoon at leisure to enjoy the property. There are plenty of quiet outdoor seating spaces that provide total tranquillity. The outdoor terrace restaurant is equally peaceful and boasts fantastic views of the scenic valley below. Dinner tonight will be at the hotel’s restaurant.

Day 6: Introduction to Berber Culture

This day will mark your introduction to a very different component of Moroccan culture: the Berber way of life in the High Atlas Mountains. After breakfast at your hotel, you’ll depart to a nearby town where you’ll meet our expert mountain guide who will accompany you throughout your day. We will provide walking sticks, rental hiking boots if needed, as well as a mule for you to ride in case you get tired during the hike.

The hike can be adjusted entirely depending on your physical aptitude and desires, but the typical route is a 3-hour moderate difficulty climb into the Atlas Mountains where you see phenomenal landscapes and learn all about the local culture, history, and fauna/flora from our mountain guide. The payoff to the hike comes when you settle down on the terrace of a local family home with a stunning view of Mt Toubkal. A warm mint tea awaits you as you sit down, followed by a tasty homemade meal. The lunch break (included) leaves plenty of time to admire the view, and you'll return back on a different route (typically 1 hour) to be back in your hotel in the late afternoon But, we can easily adjust the hike to instead be a leisurely guided walk through the local Berber village with time to shop from local artisan cooperatives and admire the Berber way of life.

No matter if you prefer to do the longer hike or just a short stroll, this day will be an incredible chance to learn about a unique facet of Moroccan culture. Finally, you’ll then return to your hotel for a well-deserved dinner! (not included).

Day 7: Exploring a Coastal Paradise

Following breakfast, you'll begin the drive from Marrakech to the coastal city of Essaouira (around a 3-hour drive). You'll stop along the way to visit a local argan oil cooperative, where locals press the argan oil and use it for nutrition and traditional medicine (it is also used to fabricate traditional black soap used in hammam treatments!). Today there is great exploitation of the argan forests because of the growingly popular cosmetic values of argan oil. The product has become very expensive, not only because about 40kg of the raw fruit is needed to extract 1 kg of oil, but also because it takes about 8 hours of manual work, mostly by women living in rural areas.

From the Argan Oil Coop, you’ll head to a local vineyard for a delectable lunch and a wine tasting at a local vineyard. While Morocco may not come to mind immediately when thinking of where wine is produced, its soil is excellent for growing several varieties of grapes. Today you'll visit Val D’Argan known for its fantastic white and grey wines.

Finally, arrive in Essaouira in the late afternoon and have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 8: Sightseeing in Essaouira

After breakfast, you will start your guided visit of the city’s old ramparts, the medina and the artisan cooperatives, and visit the Jewish heritage sites. With its brilliant blue and white architecture, windswept beach and easy-going charm, Essaouira is a lovely change from the hectic pace of Marrakech. On your guided visit, you'll learn all about the city's history and the influence left over the centuries by the Carthaginians, Romans, and Portuguese. Behind the 18th century, sea walls are thuya wood workshops, artists’ enclaves and silent alleyways where cats sun themselves and veiled women emerge from studded doorways. The harbor is a photographer’s dream, with fishing nets laid out on the quayside and boats unloading their catches. Dine on a lunch of freshly caught and grilled seafood. You can try the famous sardines, hot or traditional Moroccan white fish, octopus, and even lobster. It’s all grilled to order and your guide will be there to help you navigate the best stalls and place your order. Your lunch is (not included)!

Optional extra (Sunset ATV/camel/horseback ride by the beach) - In the afternoon, if you opted for the sunset ATV/camel/horseback riding, you will set out for a ride through the sand. Enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze, exploring Essaouira’s dunes and beaches in a fun-filled adventure!

If you chose to sit this one out, take the rest of the afternoon to explore more independently. Essaouira is known for its wood carvings and pottery, so it’s a great place to shop for final gifts and souvenirs. Plus, the laid-back and more orderly feeling of its medina makes it enjoyable to explore on your own.

Enjoy dinner on your own and your last night in Essaouira at leisure.
