Situated in the autonomous Uighur region of Xinjiang, on the route that leads to Pakistan, bordering China and Tajikistan, Lake Karakul is nestled at an altitude of 3,600m in an imposing landscape..

My review

It covers almost 100,000km² and is surrounded by three majestic peaks that reach more than 7,000m high - the Muztagh Ata, the Kongur Tagh and the Kongur Tiube (7,530m).

If you're passing through Kashgar, at the end of the Chinese Silk Road, it's well worth heading on to this lake to enjoy a nature tour of one or more days. An amazing experience, where you'll cross a dune-covered landscape, inhabited by yaks and camels. Walk around a lake surrounded by breathaking views and, if you fancy a break, spend a night in a Kazakh yurt.
