With some of its summits reaching over 21,000 ft in height, the Cordillera Real is South America's very own roof of the world. With its exceptional scenery and snow-capped summits (e.g. those of Illampu and Huayna Potosí), its windswept steppes, its tranquil lakes (e.g. Laguna Glaciar and Laguna Jurikhota) and its crystal clear rivers (e.g. Rio Chachakumani), it is an absolute hiker's dream.
Allow about twenty days if you plan to explore the entire mountain range. However, before setting out on your trek in the Bolivian Andes, you need to make sure you meet certain conditions and have particular things in place: a good state of health, proper preparation, the ability to cope with the high altitude, a good quality mountain guide, etc.
Trekking in the Cordillera Real mountains is a seriously challenging undertaking that will require you to call upon all the resources your physical fitness and mental strength have to offer. So are you ready to face the various climbs and descents, the glacial temperatures and the prospect of altitude sickness? If yes, then you should know that one of the most beautiful sections you will tackle on your adventure will be the stage that takes you near the Rio Chachakuumani.
