Far from being an essential leg during a holiday in Guatemala, the town of Sayaxché was, for me, a quick stopover whilst I was travelling between the coffee-growing region of Cobán and the tropical climes of Petén. All the same, the town is a useful base from which to explore some of the lesser known Maya sites that date back to the Classic Period. Two note-worthy ones are El Ceibal and Aguateca, which you can access via a lovely motorboat ride down Rio de la Pasión.
To get around Sayaxché, vehicles need to cross the river on a type of barge - it's provides an opportunity to take a break by the banks or even spend a night in the jungle that lines the Rio.
