Tigranakert of Artsakh was an Armenian city constructed before the onset of the Middle Ages. Situated in the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic,  on the way to Askeran, the early 21st Century excavations were extensive and a fascinating, nearby museum opened in 2010.

It's surprising to find such a large archaeological site (around 50ha) in a country so small. On the edge of <a href="/armenia/">Karabagh</a>, which itself is on the edge of Armenia, Tigranakert is one of Armenia's most impressive archaeological sites.
Murals, Hellenic towers, house foundations and a 5th Century basilica are apparent and give the visitor an idea of the size of this town, which, like many 1st and 2nd Century BC Armenian towns, was named after King Tigrane.
After excavations began in 2005, the government came up with the idea of building a reconstruction of the imagined fortress of Tigranakert in order to house a museum! Many of the excavated objects, including ceramics, coins and sculptures, are housed and exhibited in this brand new building, which sits at the base of the hill.
