The ruin of the Amberd Fortress is 2300 m above sea level; it is a symbolic monument perched on top of a stony setting and at the foot of Mount Aragats. Just next to the Vahramashen church (11th century) is another architectural and scenic gem.

Aparan, a small town that is as severe as it is picturesque, lies at the foot of Mount Aragats, Armenia's roof. A small town in the high plateaus, buffeted by the winds, dry and freezing in winter, it is an ideal point of departure for climbing Aragats.

In itself, there's nothing particularly remarkable about Tsaghkashen, a small village on the high plateaus of Gegharkunik, a lunar landscape, overlooking lake <a href="/armenia/">Sevan</a>, not far from Gandzak.
But it's the village highest up the Eastern face of the Gegham mountains, making Tsaghkashen a great base for hiking trips! The Sevan plateau is higher than the villages of Kotayk, on the Western face; this means it's easier to reach the summits from this side.
Additionally, Tsaghkashen is home to a beautiful monument, the little church of Sourp Hovhannes (Saint Yoannès), dating from the Fourth Century. Not in particularly good upkeep, it is nonetheless aesthetically pleasing, with its shingles and cut stone in sombre volcanic colours, blacks and reds. I'd certainly recommend a visit!
