We were in the desert, in the middle of nowhere and 150 kilometres from Exmouth when our car finally gave up the ghost. So we were forced to return to Exmouth for a ten day stay.
It's hard to say anything about Exmouth as a town because the most memorable thing about it are the amazing white sandy beaches and the turquoise water. My high rating is explained by the proximity of fabulous natural sites. You may not know it, but the western coast of Australia has a coral reef every bit as beautiful as the famous Great Barrier Reef on the east coast, which has been severely damaged in some places. I'm not particularly comfortable in the water and I tend to panic if my feet don't touch the bottom. When I was 100 metres from the shore, I soon realised that Ningaloo Reef can be accessed by anyone. So there I was, with a mask over my face and a snorkel clenched between my teeth, exploring another world, that of the ocean bed. Depending on what time of year you visit Australia, You might see dolphins, whale sharks, dugongs, turtles, rays and mantas, etc.
The Cape Range National Park is another high point - Australia in all its splendour! The vastness, the colour of the earth, somewhere between red and ochre, the kangaroos leaping out of nowhere (watch out if you're driving). I really loved this place.
