Best places to visit in Bhutan

To go on a trip to Bhutan, is to wander up and down a little known country with a unique culture that is intact. It is not always easy to find the right itinerary: most tour operators propose similar trips. How to choose and personalise your trip?

Once you have gone past the entry formalities, your first contact with Bhutan will be Thimphu, the only capital without traffic lights: discover the kingdom's seat of religious and political power, the superb Dzong (a fortress) that houses the monastic body and the King's cabinet or yet again the huge golden statue of Buddha that protects the valley and its inhabitants.

After this go back to Paro, your place of arrival. This is where the most famous Himalayan monastery, Taktsang or Tiger's Nest, is situated. A hike that is roughly 4 h awaits you, do not miss it! This is one of the things you must do when in Bhutan.

Now that you are familiar with Bhutan, it is up to you to decide on how to proceed with the rest of your trip: you can continue towards the east of the country to visit the famous Dochula pass, then come back down towards the hospitable Punakha valley and then push on towards Bumthang, the country's spiritual heart.

But why not stay in the west of the country and get off the beaten track? In this case, do not miss the monastery ofEutok, a few miles from Paro or again the remote Goempa of Chemphu, a small, isolated temple in the heart of a green valley.
