Kampong Kleang (Cambodia)

Kompong Khleang is the furthest floating village from Siem Reap, which means it offers the guarantee of an off-the-beaten-track experience and is really worth the trip! Chong Kneas, the village that lies close to Siem Reap, is a real tourist trap, and Kompong Phluk is a lot smaller. Kompong Khleang genuinely does not get many tourists.

It really is a nice place to see and explore: cool and fresh, and offering plenty of opportunities for contact with the local population. I spent around two hours walking around the stilt-house villages admiring the buildings, and the people who live the locals are very friendly and welcoming. I also got to see the floating village itself. This was the part I enjoyed the most because it's the most fascinating: seeing the children going to school by boat was a pretty unique experience! 

During my stay in Siem Reap, I wanted a change from visiting temples and was looking for something to do for half a day. Most agencies offered the same things so I just needed to decide what to do and how much to pay for it. After getting some information I decided to visit Kampong Khleang. I had heard bad things about two other floating villages, Kampong Phluk and especially Chong Kneas which, apparently, is just a big tourist trap. 

I really enjoyed my visit to Kampong Khleang. As well as visiting the floating village we also stopped at a crafts workshop to watch the craftsmen at work. When we arrived at the village a little boat took us all round the floating houses. The visit finished with an extra - a trip through the mangroves in pirogues paddled by women. And to close, we went onto Tonlé Sap lake to watch the sun set. In brief, it was all well organised and went well!
