The Outaouais region is due west of Quebec, on the frontier with Ontario and English-speaking Canada.
One of the biggest events in the region is the Festival des Montgolfières (hot-air balloon festival), the 27th e edition of which will be held this year. If you're lucky enough to be in the region in late August/early September, I advise you to go along and take a look. It's really amazing to see hundreds of these huge balloons flying across the skies of Gatineau.
Would you like to try a different version of Quebec's signature dish, 'poutine' (cheese chips and gravy!)? If you've already experienced this gastronomic delight, you may be pleased to hear that it's been given a 'twist' by local restaurateurs. They've developed a gastronomic version of our much-loved poutine! At L’Aubergiste, the Pub Chelsea, and the BBQ Shop, you can try poutine with duck confit or with smoked chicken, while at the Général Tao you can experience it with pepper or barbecue sauce, etc. In a nutshell, the chefs have gone all out to find new flavour combinations for this dish, the original version of which is far from a gastronomic treat...try it out when you're travelling in this part of Canada!
