Situated to the southwest of Sichuan Province, Leshan is a small, pleasant town, famous for being home to the UNESCO classified 'Giant Buddha of Leshan'.
My review
At 71m tall and with a 28m girth, this stone sculpture is carved into the flank of Mount Lingyun. It's the largest pre-20th Century Buddha in the world. Carved between 713 and 803, legend (and the monk who insipired its construction) says it's purpose is to protect sailors and warn of impending floods.
Apart from seeing the Leshan Giant Buddha, you can also head out of town to Mount Emei. At 30 or so kilometers away, it's one of the country's four Buddist, mountain pilgrimage sites. Leshan's other attractions include the Wuyou Temple and the Thousand Buddha Cliff.
