Agios Nikolaos, the capital of the Lassithi region, is the Saint-Tropez of Crete!

My suggestion:
The perfect spot to enjoy Cretan specialities: extra-virgin olive oil, thyme honey....
My review

Agios Nikolaos is a place you must visit when you are in Crete. It is a pretty little port, surrounded by cafe terraces, authentic craft shops and historical monuments. I suggest you visit the archeological museum a little gem in Agios Nikolaos. It is the second best archeological museum in Crete, after that of Heraklion!

Several exhibits in the museum in Agios are quite simply stunning and date from all periods, from the Neolithic age to the end of the Roman empire. In particular, you should visit room II to see the statue of the goddess Myrtos, an acknowledged artistic masterpiece and room VII to see the wonderful athlete's head crowed with golden laurel leaves.

For those who like cultural trips there is a lovely art gallery and folk museum: perfect for looking at family photos, jewellery, and clothing from local daily life. There are some splendid Byzantine treasures to be found in the area surrounding Agios Nikolaos with the Panagia i Kera church frescoes.

If sporting activities is more your thing, Agio Nikolaos is a well-known place for scuba diving in the Mirabello gulf.
