Meaning "monasteries hanging in the sky", Meteora is, in fact, a series of Orthodox Christian monasteries perched on rocks in northern Greece.

My suggestion:
Dress correctly to visit this religious site. Short skirts, vest tops and trousers are forbidden for women; shorts are forbidden for men. Long skirts are loaned to women in each monastery.
My review

Classed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998, the monasteries of Meteora are some of the most surprising places I was able to visit during my trip to Greece. Erosion has made these rocks extraordinary, in a part of the country which is relatively flat. Built in the 14th century by monks who were trying to escape from the Turks and Albanians; supplies and men reached the top of the rocks by nets.

Today, only 6 of the monasteries at Meteora are still active. One of those is only inhabited by women. Since the 14th century, steps and paths have been constructed to allow tourists to access the sites. There you can discover floral gardens, wine cellars, prayer rooms... The monasteries at Meteora provide a magnificent view over the surrounding areas.
