In the extreme south of the eastern coast of Sulawesi is the little seaside town of Bira, which is famous for boat building and its paradisaical beaches.

My suggestion:
Don't be afraid to go and look at the boat builders, the Sulawesians will be happy to show you around and explain their skills.
My review

Both Bira and Sulawesi are little known. But they are really worth the detour. I was very impressed by these constructions which you can explore from any of the twisty roads that are hidden along the beach. They are the best for building enormous wooden boats but the ladders for getting up them are made from two planks of wood with a few bits of bark nailed to them for steps.

And these are real picture postcard beaches. The only downside is the amount of rubbish you can find on them. Nevertheless they are sublime.
