Candi Dasa, the fishing village where the sea is reclaiming its rights.

My suggestion:
Do not expect beautiful white sandy beaches but search for a high point, the view over the bay of Candi Dasa is breathtaking.
My review

Candi Dasa is a fishing village known for its beautiful diving and snorkeling spots.

I discovered a bay where the sea is trying to reclaim its rights: for many years the corals and sea wall were weakened and destroyed in places. Hotels on the beach watch the sea advancing day by day.

We only take advantage of the "beach" for a very short time, at low tide. Nevertheless, I really enjoy snorkeling in the morning. It is better to take a boat to go to the best spots. There are corals of all colours, a superb spectacle.

I have been warmly welcomed by the fishermen of Candi Dasa who love talking to passing people and treat us as friends, we then feel we are more than just a simple tourist.

A fishing village that's been turned into a money-making machine. A typical example of tourism gone wrong.

My suggestion:
Tourism should be a responsible financial mechanism that respects both the landscape and the population. Stop off for lunch at a local food stall, but the rest of the costly investments deserve to be boycotted!
My review

The development of the tourist industry in Bali is sometimes extreme and Candi Dasa is no exception. A few years ago people would talk about a marvellous, quiet fishing village, with a great beach and superb sea. Its beauty attracted imcompetent investors who subsequently developed the area.

As for me, I only had a quick stopover there, whilst travelling by motorbike along the east coast. The long, built up road is lined with stalls and restaurants that are great for a lunch break, but other than that...

Candi Dasa is just another seaside resort filled with hotels and shops selling clothes or souvenirs. The beach that once held pride of place in the village no longer exists. Even though the town could make for a fun, family holiday in Indonesia, it deserves to returned to its former state, thereby ruining the tourist development that itself has ruined a little corner of paradise, much loved by its local population.

Sad sunset, sad truth - Candi Dasa
