There are numerous museums but there is no museum pass. Count between 1000 and 1500 yen per museum. The works of art and museums are scattered throughout the island, so the rental of a bicycle, electric bike or scooter (you need an international licence for the latter) just a few yards from the pier is an excellent way to discover the island in a day.
The most emblematic is the Benesse Museum, which includes works by Japanese and European artists as well as many statues outdoors, such as the famous pumpkin by Yayoi Kusama.
The Art House project is one of my favourite museums and brings together houses whose interior have been transformed into works of contemporary art. Some focus on the relationship between tradition and modernity, while another is a sensory experience. At the end of the day, a visit to the I love Yu (Yu meaning hot water in Japanese) onsen will bring an end to the day in a pleasant and decidedly kitsch decor. For more photos and details, look here.
