Why not begin in the capital, Beirut, the inspiration of songwriters and poets and a city which remains the country's real cultural centre. You'll be able to admire the elegant renovated apartments in the town centre and to walk along the coast road before dropping into one of the numerous bars in Hamra or Achrafieh.
Another must-see in Lebanon is the Baalbek archaeological site, a UNESCO world heritage site, whose three temples will delight any fan of history. Returning to the coast, don't forget to discover Byblos, a pretty little fishing port which the jet-setters of the 60s fell in love with.
If you like venturing off the beaten track, pay a visit to Tripoli, the country's second-largest city. Little-visited by tourists, a visit here will give you an insight into the real Lebanon. And you won't be disappointed by its medina and bakeries! From Tripoli, you could head to the Qadisha valley, an amazing gorge which is home to around a dozen Troglodyte monasteries, as well as containing the village where one of Lebanon's great poets, Khalil Gibran, was born. Further South, the port of Saïda, recently restored, offers a different kind of atmosphere, with its souk and craftsmen.
