Probablement the only town in Mauritius which manages to remain a popular tourist destination despite its location far from the beaches, Curepipe – which is also known by the name 'La Ville Lumière' – stands out due to its rich culture, as evidenced by its 200-year-old buildings and architecture. I found the turrets of its church especially impressive. Having had my fill of the urban life offered by the second largest town in Mauritius, I then went for a walk in its large Botanical Gardens, strolling alongside its lake in all its verdant greenery and admiring its water lilies and its cardinals: wonderful brightly-plumaged birds the size of sparrows. With the peaks of the Trois Mamelles rising up high in the background, Curepipe is unique; it's the only destination you can go to when visiting Mauritius that has mountain scenery to offer. Something else that makes it unique is the presence of the crater of the Trou aux Cerfs volcano, which lies less than three kilometres from the town's centre. A dormant basaltic depression surrounded by vegetation, it threatens to eventually erupt at some point (though that's not expected to happen for several centuries yet). A landscape unlike anywhere else in the world, this is definitely an essential place to see.
