Made of raw, red-coloured bricks, kasbahs (fortified quarters) sheltered the ruling family and their guard. The Kasbah Taourirt belonged to the Glaoui tribe of Marrakesh (Moroccan pashas). Unlike the other Glaoui kasbahs, the Taourirt one has escaped ruin. It is used as a setting for films, including the famous Star Wars, and has been well restored.
It is quite a huge place, so allow a good hour for the visit. I liked the Kasbah Taourirt's crenellated towers, roughcast pink walls in which are etched geometric patterns and its vividly coloured mosaics .
I suggest you visit the reception rooms and the private apartments of the Glaoui family. I almost got lost in the maze of corridors, a real labyrinth! Certain corridors will take you to the bedroom of the Glaoui's favourite, with its ceiling made of cedar wood. Once the visit is over, you can stroll around the fortified village behind the kasbah. A Berber village to discover during a stay in Morocco .
