Founded on the Banks peninsula, on New Zealand's South Island, Akaroa is still evidenced by the attempt of French colonization. In fact, arriving in the city center, I noticed right away that there were still some streets with French names, and then I hung around in front of a butcher sporting the French colors.
The city is very calm in the winter, but the population quadruples when nicer weather comes. In fact, it's geographic proximity to Christchurch makes a day trip possible, making it a favorite vacation spot. Just passing through the area during winter, I can't say if "the invasion" remains bearable.
A small port, along a developed waterfront, Akaroa gave me a sense of healing, as if time had stopped for a weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't take the time to go for any of the walks offered in the area, but they allow you to get some height and thus take advantage of exceptional views of the bay.
