Until I actually went to Peru, I had no idea the country contained a desert! I was astonished when I first saw the dunes around the oasis of Huacachina.
The oasis is located on the country's Pacific coast and forms part of the province of Ica. The village itself is quite tiny, and life there revolves almost entirely around tourist activities.
During my stay I took the opportunity to visit the region's vineyards, the bodegas. The province of Ica is famous as a pisco and wine producing region. Pisco is an alcoholic spirit that the Peruvians are particularly proud to call their own. Never say to a Peruvian that pisco comes from Chile: you'll get a strong reaction! Delicious when used in cocktails, pisco is the basic ingredient in the famous Pisco Sour.
Huacachina, with its dunes of red sand and its oasis of emerald water, offers a quite unique spectacle. In my opinion, this is one of the essential places to see in Peru.

Huacachina lake is very unusual and it's true that it's in a beautiful setting. Imagine: a mini lake (a bit muddy perhaps) right in the middle of the desert and surrounded by innumerable sand dunes - well there you have it.
It's also a really popular destination, something that you will realise as soon as you set foot in the little village next to the lake. Here there is everything a tourist could want and nothing else. As a result, although lots of visitors love spending a few days here, for my part I wasn't really keen on this aspect of the place.
On the programme round here, dune buggy rides, sandboarding and lying around doing nothing. I really recommend you go for a walk in the dunes which stretch as far as the eye can see. The panorama is staggering and the sun set amazing.
