Reviews of Huye

A major Rwandan city, Huye (formerly Butare) is characterised by the fact that it is an intellectual centre thanks to its academic and scientific institutions.

My suggestion:
Located halfway between Kigali and Nyungwe National Park, Huye will make for a pleasant stop along your way during your trip to Rwanda . You will find a few affordable, good quality hotels along or just off the main road .
My review

The town of Huye is rarely seen as a place of interest, but it is home to one of the country's biggest museums and so deserves this stop over. The ethnographic museum exhibits a lovely collection that gives a glimpse of Rwanda's cultural riches. It presents a multitude of history, art, nature and the traditions of this country's inhabitants. I was impressed by the quality of the exhibition, as well as the quantity, and the excellent condition of the place.

19 miles from Huye , on the road to Nyungwe, is the Murambi Genocide Memorial Museum. This museum recounts and commemorates the horror experienced by tens of thousands of Rwandans, who took refuge in this school on the hill during the 1994 genocide. It is a particularly fetching, beautiful memorial place. Whole buildings contain preserved corpses, which can be hard to bear.
