South Korea today: an ultra modern country

We hear little of South Korea in the daily news, because the country enjoys a great economic and political stability. But see some interesting information here before leaving for your trip to South Korea.

The political situation of South Korea

In contrast to its cousin and enemy, North Korea, South Korea is a democracy, in which the president is elected every five years by direct universal suffrage. It's he who is named Prime Minister and President of the Council State.

There are two large parties in the country, with strongly opposing ideologies: the conservatives party, called Saenuri since 2012, and the URI party, which is the centre-left party, formed in 2003. In 2015, the president of South Korea is called Park Geun-Hye, and is part of the conservative party.

South Korea's enconomy

South Korea possesses one of the 12 highest GDPs in the world and has experienced an annual growth of over 6%, and that started 10 years ago. It's a thriving economy, which has not entered into crisis, and which has solid groundings, notably in the electronic industry and principally in naval construction.

With regard to outside trade, South Korea has China as its main client, and the country has become the fifth (largest) exporter of the world, rising above France for the first time in 2015.

Korean news

South Korea is a very stable country, except when we speak about its neighbour, North Korea. In fact, in mid-2015, North Korea renewed its threats to strike against the South and announced the resumption of its nuclear activity. Also there are ever present, strong tensions between the two countries, even if there are soon to be predicted improvements.
