Haputale is a charming and picturesque little village which will enchant you. It's surrounded by tea plantations as far as the eye can see. It's located in the heart of Sri Lanka to the south of the island.
My suggestion:
I really loved the rolling countryside which typifies this region. If you have the time, take a day or two longer to explore more of the plantations and savour the tranquil life of the village.
My review
Driving through the heart of this amazing landscape was a fantastic experience because here we reached the historic centre of the old colonial Sri Lanka. I hired a private driver/guide for the trip, Gajendra Vipula, who was so kind, shared his culture with me, and our lively debates on the differences between the UK and Sri Lanka really made the trip for me. The people of the Haputale region are mostly Tamils and their presence on the tea plantations, which dates back to the arrival of the British, brings touches of colour to this deep green landscape.
When you're planning your itinerary for Sri Lanka, be sure to include the train journey that starts or ends with this city. It was one of the most memorable parts of my stay. You cross plains that are shrouded in mist one minute and then suddenly verdant and bathed in bright sunlight the next. You can eat little samosas and other, very spicy, snacks sold by street peddlers and be soothed by the local passengers who seem to particularly like singing in railway carriages…
