Stop off at Morogoro if you want a break up the journey between Dodoma and Dar Es Salaam, but don't hold your breath. There's not a lot to do, other than enjoy the normality of a non-touristy town. Even so, Morogoro is a pleasant place, overlooked by the 2,000m high Mount Mzumbe.
I liked the fact that the town's home to a big university, which meant I met some really interesting people. It probably comes as no surprise, therefore, to learn that the town's a fun place to party and I saw in the New Year of 2014 with style!
If you're fed up with touristy sites, I suggest you spend 2 or 3 days in Morogoro and enjoy daily life in a calm town, where you'll meet people who are not after your money.
