Antofagasta is a charming village at an altitude of 3,400 m, perched in the Andes in the province of <a href="/argentina/">Catarmaca</a>. In the Amerindian language the name means "heaven's hallway". The 600 inhabitants are Diaguita.  Apart from its authenticity and the welcome of its inhabitants, Antofagasta is a good place from which to visit the most beautiful sights of the region. Both Antofagasta and Alumbrera volcanoes are only a dozen kilometres away. You can also get to the archaeological site of Coyparcito, 4 kilometres away, or Lake Colorada, a lake with bright red water where numerous Andean flamingoes come to feed. About a hundred kilometres away you'll love the colours of the magnificent sites of Quebrada Seca (an immense red and ochre coloured cliff) and Mina Incahuasi (an old gold mine). You also shouldn't miss Salar del Hombre Muerto, an immense turquoise blue lake covered with salt deposits. It's difficult to believe you are still on planet Earth when you are in Catamarca.
