Myvatn is both a lake and a region of Iceland, the only inland part of the island that is inhabited. As such, the climate here is often different from the rest of the country, dryer and colder!
I think that it is one of my favourite places in Iceland, due to the variety of landscapes and the beauty of the volcanic sites: Dimmuborgir, Hverfell, Krafla... It is always amazing to see smoke coming out of the ground, boiling muddy swamps and to be surrounded by lava formations...
Of course, you can discover Myvatn in one day, but it would be a waste, I think you need at least 2 to 3 days if you really want to go on some fine walks from each spot. I also suggest you try the natural baths at least once, the North's Blue Lagoon!
Lastly, it is a wonderful site for ornithologists for the lake is home to dozens of species that migrate here in summer.
