Like most of the little islands around Iceland, Flatey is above all a stop for ornithologists and lovers of nature and tranquility.

My suggestion:
Find out about doing the crossing between the Western Fjords and Snaefellsnes peninsula with a stop-over of a few hours on the island, even stay a little longer and spend the night if you can.
My review

I stopped on Flatey Island on my way back from my tour of the Western Fjords and I had taken the ferry which arrived at Stykkishólmur.

As the name suggests, Flatey is but a small, totally flat island, whose highest point is just 52 feet above sea level. Once there, you sort of feel as if you have gone back in time, as the colourful wooden houses and the aura of the place seem so much unchanged since they were built in the 19th century!

Once there, it is a visit of the "old village", the church, the lighthouse and a walk in the vast green expanses in the aim of catching sight of puffins.

It took me a few hours to get through these visits. On the other hand this is an ideal place to stay longer in for those who want to taste the charm of contemplation and peacefulness.
