Forty five kilometers from Madaba and 25 kilometers from Mount Nebo, Bethany is a highly sacred place because Jesus was baptized right here.

My suggestion:
The site is located within a heavily monitored military zone. It's impossible to travel there alone, and you must join a group and enter with an official guide.
My review
During my journey to Jordan I hitch hiked right up to the entrance of the site at Bethany. After that, however, there was no question of bending the rules: I could only enter with an official guide. To get as far as the site, I had to give the names of El-Maghtas or Wadi Kharrar, which are better known than Bethany.
