Kosi Bay is the perfect destination for nature lovers ; especially bird-watchers, as it is home to thousands of different bird species. Do plan ahead, as roads and paths are often closed during rainy season. Kosi Bay is not suitable for diving or swimming (rather, make your way to Sodwana Bay, where you will find a beautiful beach and various diving clubs).
What's more, swimming in the bay is extremely dangerous as it is ridden with sharks, drawn to the abundant supply of fish in the lakes. Nhllange , the main lake is connected to three others: Amanzimnyama, Mpungwini and Makhawulani. During my visit there I had the opportunity to learn how to fish using the traditional method with wooden poles and nets. I also discovered what a real tropical forest was like by hiking in the middle of the mangrove swamp.
Discover Kosi Bay in a canoe, by foot or in a 4-wheel drive in the protected area surrounding the lakes. Take a boat ride from Nhlange all the way to the ocean. Visitors on foot are advised to hire a guide as crocodiles and hippopotamus roam free in the forest.
